Nool-Khol-Papaya-Sambar

#NoolkholPapayaSambar : #RawPapaya [ #UnripePapaya or #GreenPapaya] is rich in vitamins, enzymes and phytonutrients. These phytonutrients and enzymes help in improving digestion and aids in strengthening immune system of our body. When it turns into fruit it loses some of the vital nutrients and enzymes. So it is advisable to include raw papaya in our daily diet.
We have already seen a recipe to prepare soup with green papaya, Papaya Lentil Salad and Papaya Carrot Salad.
Here I am going to present the way of preparing a sambar using papaya along with noolkhol.

Noolkhol Papaya Sambar


Ingredients :
1/3 CupCooked Thuvar Dhal
small nellikkai sizeTamarind, soak in lukewarm water
1/2 Cupdiced green papaya
1/2 Cupdiced noolkhol
10 - 15Small onion [ shallots ]
2Green chilly, split lengthwise
10 - 15Curry leaves
Powders to add :
2 Tspsambar powder
1 TspCoriander powder
1/8 TspTurmeric powder
2 TspSalt
To Temper :
1 TspMustard seeds
1/4 TspAsafoetida powder
1 TspOil
Method :
Peel off green papaya and noolkhol and dice them into 1/2 inch cubes.
Peel onions and set aside.
Pressure cook noolkhol for a whistle.
Immediately release the pressure and open the lid.
Now add papaya pieces and all the powders mentioned above into the cooker..
Mash the cooked thuvar dhal and add into the cooker.
Add 3/4 cup of water and bring into boil over medium heat.
On another burner of the stove heat a kadai with oil.
Crackle mustard seeds and then add asafoetida,
Then add curry leaves, green chilly and onion.
Saute for a minute and then transfer into boiling sambar.
Squeeze the tamarind with 1/2 cup of water.
Strain the juice into boiling sambar.
Close the pressure cooker with lid placing weight over the nozzle.
Noolkhol Papaya Sambar
Pressure cook for a whistle.
Open after it ran out of steam.
Transfer into a serving bowl and garnish with coriander leaves.

Noolkhol Papaya Sambar

Take hot white rice in a plate. Pour a ladle full of sambar and add 2 or 3 drops of ghee. Mix well with hand by giving little pressure and enjoy with any curry/poriyal, koottu and a papad.
mm...ah! .. wah!...  whoever had it will surely ask for one more serving!!

Nool-Khol-Leaf-Lentil

#NoolKholLeafLentil: Last week a friend of mine sent 3 #noolkhols with leaf from her garden. The leaves were very fresh and I didn't want to throw them away. I washed a leaf and tasted. Its taste was just like radish leaf. So I decided to include the noolkhol leaves in lunch. So that day I prepared lentil with those fresh #noolkholleaf.

Noolkhol [ knolkhol ] Leaf Lentil


Here comes the preparation.



Ingredients :
1/2 cupGreen gram cooked
1/4 cupNoolkhol leaves chopped
1/4 cupOnion chopped nicely
2 or 3Green chilly split lengthwise
7 - 8Curry leaves
small amountCoriander leaves chopped
1 pinchTurmeric powder
3/4 TspSalt [ adjust ]
To Temper :
1/2 TspMustard seeds
1 TspBlack gram split
1 Red chilly, break into pieces
1 TspOil

Method :
Heat kadai on a stove over medium flame with oil.
Splutter mustard seeds and then add red chilly pieces and black gram split.
When black gram turns golden color, add curry leaves, green chilly and onion in the order.
Saute till onion becomes translucent.
Then add cooked green gram and turmeric powder.
Add 1/2 cup of water and bring it to boil.
Finally add chopped noolkhol leaves and salt.
Cook for three minutes or until the leaves turn soft.


Turn off the stove.
Transfer into a serving bowl.
Garnish with coriander leaves.

Noolkhol [ knolkhol ] Leaf Lentil


Tasty and healthy noolkhol lentil is ready.
Take hot rice in a plate and pour a big ladle full of prepared noolkhol lentil.
Mix well well with hand adding a dash of ghee.
Relish with sambar or 

any dry curry/stir fry of your choice.


Noolkhol lentil also goes well with chappathy/roti.

Knolkhol Stir Fry

#KnolkholStirFry - # KnolkholPoriyal : #Knolkhol [ #Noolkol ] is a root vegetable just like Turnip. This vegetable can be used in the preparation of sambar, Vegetable kurma and also to prepare stir fry. Here is the recipe to prepare knolkhol #stirfry.

Knolkhol Poriyal [ Knolkhol Stir Fry ]

Ingredients :


1 Cup                                Knolkhol grated
1 Tsp                                 Carrot grated
1/4 Cup                             Onion chopped nicely
1/4 Cup                             Coriander leaves
2 Tsp                                 Coconut Scrapings
1/2 Tsp                              Salt

Knolkhol - Noolkhol


To Temper :
1/2 Tsp                            Mustard seeds
1 Tsp                               Urad Dal
1 or 2                              Red chilly, break into pieces
1 Tsp                              Oil

Method :
Keep a kadai with oil on a burner over a medium flame.
Crackle mustard seeds and then add red chilly pieces and urad dal.
When dal becomes golden color, add coriander leaves and onion.
Saute for 2 minutes or till the onion changes to pink color.
Now add knolkhol, carrot and enough salt.
Mix well with a ladle.
Cover with a lid and cook over a low flame.
Knolkhol takes very less time to become soft.
Finally add coconut scrapings and mix well over a high flame.
Turn off the burner and transfer into a serving bowl.
Garnish with coriander leaves.

Knolkhol Poriyal [ Knolkhol Stir Fry ]

It goes well with sambar rice ( Hot white rice mixed with sambar )

and rasam rice ( Hot white rice mixed with rasam).
