#Millet s are small seeded grasses that grow well in dry places as a rain fed crop. It grows well in dry places even over not so fertile soil. The growing period is also less compared to rice and wheat.
They are rich source of minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, and potassium. Finger millet [ Ragi ] is having highest calcium content compared to rice and wheat.
They are non glutinous, nutritious and non acid forming food.
These millets are very good for diabetic patients as it releases lesser glucose into system over a longer period of time.

- Kodo Millet - Paspalum scrobiculatum is called Kodon in Hindi and Varagu or Varagarisi in Tamil.
- Little Millet - Panicum miliare is called Kutki in Hindi and Samai in Tamil.
- Finger Millet - Eleucine coracana is called Ragi or Mandia in Hindi and Kezhvaragu [ kevuru ] in Tamil.
- Barnyard Millet - Echinochloa frumentacea is called Sawan or Bhagar in Hindi and Kuthiraivaali in Tamil.
- Italian Millet [ Foxtail millet ] - Setaria italica is called Kakunin Hindi and Thinai in Tamil
- Pearl Millet - Pennisetum glaucum is called Bajra in Hindi and Kambu in Tamil.
