Tomato Koottu - Unripe Tomato Lentil

#ThakkalikaiKoottu #UnripeTomatoLentil : Here unripe tomatoes have been used to prepare lentil [ koottu ]. Like tomato unripe tomato can also be used to prepare many recipes. It is not a replacement to tomato but its taste is distinct. Sambar and koottu can be prepared with unripe tomato and taste very good.

Thakkalikai Koottu [ Unripe Tomato Lentil ]

Here come the recipe to prepare lentil.
Ingredients :
1/8 cup                              Green gram dal
4 or 5                                Tomato unripe, chop nicely
1                                        Tomato, chop nicely
1                                        Onion, chop nicely
1 or 2                                Green Chilly, split lengthwise


Powders to add :
1 pinch                              Turmeric Powder
3/4 Tsp                             Sambar Powder
3/4 Tsp                             Salt [ Adjust ]

To Grind :
4 Tsp                               Coconut scrap
1/4 Tsp                            Cumin
1/4 Tsp                            Rice Flour
6                                      Black Pepper

To Temper :
1/2 Tsp                           Mustard seeds
1 Tsp                              Black gram split { urad dal }
1/2 Tsp                           Oil

To Garnish :
Coriander leaves

Method :
Grind the given ingredients into a fine paste and keep aside.
Pressure cook green gram with a pinch of turmeric powder for 1 whistle.
Then reduce the flame and cook for 5 minutes.
Open after the steam completely subsides.
Transfer into a bowl and keep aside.

Now take all chopped ingredients and powders in the same cooker.
Add 1/2 cup of water.


Pressure cook for a whistle.
Release steam immediately and open the cooker.


Now add the prepared coconut paste and cooked green gram.


Mix well and heat over a medium flame for 3 minutes.
Turn off the stove and transfer into a serving bowl.

Heat a kadai with oil and splutter mustard seeds.
Now add black gram and roast till golden color.
Transfer on to the prepared lentil.

Thakkalikai Koottu [ Unripe Tomato Lentil ]

An excellent side dish for Sambar and rasam rice.
It can also be mixed with white rice and eaten with any spicy curry.

Thakkali Koottu - Tomato Lentil

#ThakkaliKoottu #TomatoLentil : this lentil tastes very good if done with naattu thakkali. Because nattu thakkali is more sour in taste than bangalore thakkali.
This is the simplest side dish from #thakkali [ #Tomato ].

Thakkali Koottu [ Tomato Lentil ]

Ingredients :
Naattu thakkali ( tomato country variety )             : 2 big sized


Thakkali [ Tomato ]

Green chilly                                               : 1
Onion                                                         : 1 small sized
Sambar Powder                                          : 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder                                        : a pinch
Salt                                                             : 1 tsp (adjust)
Coriander leaves                                         : little
Thuvar dhal( cooked )                                : 3 tblsp

To grind :
Coconut scrap                                           : 2 tblsp
Cumin                                                        : 1/4 tsp
Rice flour                                                   : 1/4 tsp
Black Pepper                                             : 4 to 6                              

To temper :
Mustard seeds                                          : 1/4 tsp
Urad dhal                                                  : 1 tsp
Oil                                                             : 1/2 tsp

Preparation :
Take all the ingredients to grind in a mixer jar.
First grind without adding water.
Then add less than 1/4 cup of water & make into a nice paste.
Keep aside.

Chop onions & tomatoes.



Split green chilly lengthwise.
Switch ON the stove.
Keep a cooking vessel with 1/4 cup of water on stove.
Add all the items except coriander leaves and cooked dhal.
Close and cook till the tomatoes become tender.




Now add ground coconut paste & cooked dhal.



Mix well and allow it to simmer for 3 to 4 minutes at SIM position.
Transfer into a serving bowl.
Temper mustard seeds & urad dhal and pour over the prepared koottu.
Garnish with coriander leaves.

Note :
Cooked green gram dhal can also be used instead of thuvar dhal.
Add one or two green chilly for spicy koottu.

Excellent side dish for rasam & sambar rice.
Can also be relished by mixing with white rice also.
Thakkali koottu also goes well with chappathy & poori.
