#Kadappa is a side dish for Idly generally done in Thanjavur region of Tamil Nadu, India. In many of the hotels hot Idlies are served with kadappa in and around Thanjavur.This is made with potato, green gram dal and specially prepared spice masala. It tastes slightly like kuruma but little watery than kuruma. Whenever we think of Idly, sambar n chutney only comes to our mind. But when you relish idly with kadappa once, you will definitely change your menu from idly - sambar to idly - kadappa.
This is how I prepare kadappa :
Ingredients :
2 Potato boiled
4 Tbsp green gram dal cooked
1 Tbsp Cauliflower pieces ( optional )
2 Tbsp Carrot pieces ( optional )
1 small size Tomato
1 medium size Onion, Slice into thin pieces
1/2 Tsp Salt
For Masala :
4 Tsp Coconut scrap
1 Tsp Khus khus
4 Cashew nuts
1 1/2 Tsp Cumin
2 Cardamom
4 Small Onion ( or onion )
3 Green Chilly ( adjust )
To Temper :
1/2 Tsp Cumin
4 Cloves
A small piece Cinnamon
1 Tsp Oil
Method :
Grind all the ingredients given using a blender into a fine paste.
Keep aside.
Peel off skin of the boiled potato.Break into equal sized pieces by crushing with hand.
Keep a kadai with oil on slow fire.
Crackle cumin and then add cloves and cinnamon piece.
Then add curry leaves and then onions. Saute until onion slices turn to pink color.
Now add cut pieces of tomato and the vegetables. Saute for 3 minutes.
Then add cooked dal with 1/2 cup of water and allow to simmer for 5 to 7 minutes.
When the vegetables are cooked soft, add potato pieces and ground masala.
Add required amount of water.
Mix well and allow to simmer until all blend together and come to required consistency.
Transfer into a serving bowl and garnish with curry leaves.
Take hot Idlies in a plate and pour three ladle full of kadappa over them and enjoy!! aha! wow!!...
